Since regularly b/p'ing I've just been losing & gaining the same 10 lbs for the most part. No steady loss or gain.

Going from AN to BN: gained

Going from just bingeing (attempting recovery) to bingeing and purging: lost

I lose really fast restricting or intermittent fasting. Since I started b/p a couple of months ago I lose very slowly or maintain. I can lose a few pounds in a day b/ping but it's just water and comes back... Overall loss is way slower and more inconsistent compared to restriction. Plus side is I can eat all the things and not gain. But it sucks imo

It depends on your intake and b/p habits honestly. I got to my LW by restricting in the day and having a 1200++kcal bp at night. Slowly gained weight during exam month when I ate normally in the day and b/p said amount at night. So yeah it varies.

Generally you look at total input, effectiveness at purging, to gauge. CICO really.

Yes this.

When I am bp'ing regularly, it can be easier for me to "justify" keeping down more snacks or food with friends during the day. But it all adds up; if you are keeping down over your TDEE, you'll gain. So if you assume you are keeping down a fraction of each bp, then look at how much you are eating outside of bp'ing. For me, if I eat closer to "normal" then bp on top of that that's when I maintain; if I snack and don't purge I gain; if I restrict and bp I lose.

Because I restrict outside of binges, I lose.

Lose or maintain

This is what will determine whether you gain, maintain or lose with bulimia:

  • Effective with purging - able to bring everything up within a short period of time or prior to your body digesting calories - this differs depending on your body's digestion
  • Eat very little out of your binges or nothing at all - 500 calories low
  • B/P regularly/daily/weekly - so you do not retain water - water weight is very common if you stop purging
  • Your 'binge/purge' sessions are actually normal meals
  • Your 'binge/purge' sessions are objectively small compared to an actual binge

  • All of the above but you eat a little bit more perhaps
  • Not as effective at purging  - maybe you're lazy with it, take a while or just don't intend to get everything out

  • Ineffective purger - you absorb most of the calories of your binges
  • You eat normally out of your binges (i.e. 2000 calories)

Weight depends on calories in VS calories out. If you're keeping in more than you burn =  gain and if you keep in less = you lose. It also really depends on your metabolism.

However, I have seen time and time again...the people who post on this forum who are anorexic binge/purge subtype either restrict very heavily out of b/p sessions, B/P daily &/or keep nothing in. A few years back I also became anorexic b/p subtype this way. I think all I kept in was probably vegetables or very low calorie foods. As time went on I tried to be better and eat more, I gained weight but I also think I became an ineffective purger (was no longer able to get everything up)

So to be an anorexic b/p subtype, even eating 1000 calories out of your b/p sessions may not work. *shrugs*

TBH I don't think i'd want to be underweight this way. I would rather be heavier than commit to daily binging and purging. Thats a recipe for self-hatred and it would stop you from engaging with life.

I gained over 23lbs from b/ping. I've gained 23lbs since March 2016. It's hell.
It's even more hellacious when you try not to purge and yet continue to binge. I'm 6 days purge free, and yet I've gained 1.5lbs. Because I can't stop overeating.

I have lost most of the weight as a result of restriction not binging/purging. It's the restriction between binging/purging that helped me lose weight.
