I am Catholic. Fasting is food for the soul so to me it is not against church teaching. A lot of the saints fasted.

I’m a cradle catholic! I was discerning the religious life before I had some experiences that made me question the structure of the Church, but I still pray the rosary and am a Catholic for all intents and purposes for the time being.

For Catholics with EDs:

Is it vanity or gluttony?

I think it's both. I know it's an old post, sorry..

I was raised Catholic (coming from Poland) but after Confirmation my Church relationship weakened completely. I got revived interest in religion at university. Last year again, I was more into religion. But it's not a solid thing. I would say though that the Catholic culture is still a big and important part of me. When I discuss various things with my friends, sometimes I find that our views clash and I can see how my opinions on some things can be pretty Catholic and influenced by it. I like going to church for reassurance, though I do it very occasionally, and I haven't been to a church for ages due to covid. I quite like the idea of Saints, like you have someone specific to turn to. I would also say that religion can be very good for helping with recovery. It depends on the individual, though. For some religious past is a source of trauma.

I was never really active about doing Lent things, no one in my family was, but I definitely see the appeal! I try to live a modest (yet interesting) life, and Lent is a good manifestation of modesty and reflection.

I oddly enough plan to go to a seminary or monastery after college and am pretty well read in Catholicism due to this. It is really a struggle as I find fasting to be a strong discipline either way and that it motivates me to be a better person even if the motivation appears to be vanity. Either way, fasting for vanity is better than gluttony for any conditions. As for the culpability of binging as gluttony, I really feel it to be sinful at most times because I would blame those with alcohol and porn addictions and LGBT people as acting sinful when they act on those behaviors regardless of their status as mental issues. The mental issue is merely something that strengthens temptation.

Being at a secular college does not help my mental issues because I am very skeptical of the whole "self care" and what not. I feel that the only way to rid this illness is to do as Christ said, "This kind can go out by nothing, but by prayer and fasting." (Mark 9:28). Modern psychology would not condone self-mortification and penitential practices.

It's hard because this detracts from my ability to pray and actually feel like filling my purpose in life, and these eating disorder pursuits seem so selfish and, therefore, sinful
