i've fasted multiple times before but i've only managed to do a maximum of 52 hours - after that i break and eat something. does anyone have any tips on how to keep a fast going for longer? i drink a lot of water and i chew gum to stop my food cravings but as soon as i start to feel faint, i eat and then end up eating up to 600 cals a day for a few days in a row. i want to start a strict fast tomorrow but i really want to avoid any food cravings, any tips?

The maximum I've previously been able to do is 57 hours after feeling really sick. I'm currently on hour 75 this time and want to last as long as possible. This time I've been taking magnesium tablets and stopped exercising altogether, which has helped. I've read that people feel a lot better after taking salt, potassium and magnesium. Some say don't take a multivitamin though. And to drink at least 2L of water a day. Diet soda may help if you are feeling faint. Peppermint tea helps nausea. Green tea helps your metabolism. That's all I've got. Good luck!

If the gum isn't flavorless and sugar-free that might be your issue. A famous study on fasting know as "The Minnesota Starvation Experiment" found that in two groups of individuals who had extremely restricted caloric intake, the group that was allowed chewing gum experienced much stronger and prolonged food cravings (some participants chewing 10 packs a day). The scientist theorized this was because the act of chewing gum activates our body digestion response, so our body expect food. Cravings occur when that expectation is not met. Here is a link to the study results and if you are not big on reading, a link to a video about the experiment. This affect of gum can be curbed if the gum is not flavored and is sugar free.

Currently on day  1 of a 30 day water fast, only going to chew & spit to prove to my parents I am eating.
