Hi all!

I have pica, had it since I was a kid. My favorite inedible things to eat are paper, tape, and thread/embroidery floss. I think it's a nervous thing because it gets worse when I am under a lot of stress.

It also increases when I restrict. Lately I've been trying to do a diet with mostly fruit and under 1200 calories and my pica has been bad. I'm to the point where I'm carrying things with me to munch on, like paper in my pocket.

Related, I heard in a YouTube video that models eat tissue to stay lean when they're hungry.

Does anyone else's pica increase when they restrict?

I don’t have pica but when i restrict i definitely exhibit more behaviours like eating toothpicks which i absolutely love lol and things like blue tack and rubbers. i guess maybe the brain wants something to munch on because it misses the sensation of eating.

Hello,
I have pics and have craved all sorts of things. The last couple years it was charcoal. I ate 5-10 briquettes a day. I couldn't stop. I was in the hospital earlier this summer and amongst other things they discovered I was severely anemic. So I left the hospital with a prescription for iron supplements and Zoloft (for anxiety) my craving/ desperate compulsion was cured. I stopped and have no desire to start again

Woah, charcoal briquettes! I think that actually can be a sign of anemia now that I think about it.

Yeah, that's what I think too.
I used to chew gum but I would get so hungry I would just end up eating packs of gum & it wasn't worth the calories. So now it's thread and paper.
I'm literally stashing paper I like to eat around my apartment for if I get a craving.

I've been like that in the past. My pica food is/was Johnson's Baby powder. I had times when I could finish 22oz bottle in about five days when I was doing really well with restriction. Any other time it would take about seven days. A 15oz bottle would take about three when restricting and five when not. 

 

But in recent two to three years I've cut way down to the 1.5oz or 4oz, depending on what I can find. On rare occasions I'd dabble in a 9oz or 15oz. 

 

And during the lockdown I haven't had any at all, while restricting more consistently than I have in the entirety of my ED.

That's amazing you've cut down!!! Especially because I wonder if baby powder can be toxic?

I just always reach for paper/thread when I'm hungry and I won't let myself eat. It sucks but at least I'm not consuming extra ... I recently chipped a tooth on hard plastic so I stopped chewing on those.

Also I reread my op on trying to eat 1000 calories in only fruit - so dumb. Don't do that guys. I ended up with major diarrhea and and a bp in 4 days.

I eat my dry lipskin and suck the blood out of my lips when im mentally hungry. I dont realise im doing it until i do. I eat scabs. I pick at my face more, especially under my cheekbones if theres bumps and poppable things (i dont eat THAT but after it forms a scab, yes.)...my hand just kinda goes there and starts picking in a mindless way. Wish id stop the face picking and lip peeling. I guess i crave blood, fresh or dried. And skin.

oh yes, i've been eating a lot more toilet paper than i used to (my paper of choice). we have 2 ply tp so i'll separate the pieces, tear off a small piece and let it dissolve on my tongue or chew like normal. i like embroidery floss or loose strings from clothing, i'll twirl those around my tongue and swallow it rather than chew it.

My pica definitely increases when I'm restricting. My favourite will always be paper lol. Now I take the leftover raws paper I used for smoking, roll is really tight then nibble on it haha

I do this too! But I considered it part of anxiety not pica.

Yeah i noticed that when i go after my face to try to pop stuff, its anxiety or stress that triggers it. The frequency actually goes down when i restrict enough. Idk what i was on about back there.

Like two weeks ago i gave myself a pretty annoying wound in my mouth. Annoying because it rubbed against my bottom incisors and that delayed healing. Detered me from eating kinda. I was biting at the inside of my cheek near my mouth and kept tearing and eating bits until i was getting these little round ball-like squishy bits and i kept going and then i was sucking blood out of it and was getting a lot of blood on purpose because i was sucking pretty hard and i kept checking in the mirror to see how much blood was in my mouth and because i like the look of blood in my mouth or id spit into my hand to see and...i would lick it back up out of my hand because i didnt want to waste it....i am DISGUSTANG. well obviously i thought it was fabulous but im just speaking for others. My description is disgusting though.

I kept saying as a joke I GOT PLASTIC SURGERY because it sure felt like it and i thought it was changing the shape of the corner of my mouth in a good way. Its all healed now. It took a week or so.

Yeah, hunger & anxiety makes me do the pica (idk what to call it?)
Pica confession - I have to do laundry at work (I'm a housekeeper) and I chew off the frayed threads of the cleaning rags.
