I want to be vegan but last time I ate a plant based lifestyle my iron levels dangerously low 3 times and needed infusions. I’m on twice daily tablets the highest they can prescribe
Even though I had vitamin c with all iron sources. I want to be a vegan For ethical reasons mostly. But I’m finding it hard due to iron deficiency Anaemia

i mean i’d talk to your doctor if you’re taking the highest prescribable dose and still becoming anemic, it sounds like theres something wrong with how you’re metabolizing the iron but i’m not a doctor.

The definition of veganism is excluding animal exploitation... as far as is possible and practicable. If you have to consume animal products occasionally in order to literally survive, you can still call yourself vegan. Try replacing all other animal products (eggs, milk, cheese, leather) with plant-based versions, and work on not contributing to animal exploitation by attending zoos etc. You can still make an ethical impact on the world without being "100% vegan". If you feel uncomfortable calling yourself vegan when you still have to consume animal products, you could call yourself an "aspiring vegan" or a "90% vegan" or something like that, and give the caveat to people that "I have to consume X, Y times a week, or else I cannot function because of this health condition".

Some tips/info I would give is that often people consume more iron naturally on a plant-based diet, just from eating more beans, which are super high in iron. The average person actually consumes the majority of their iron from plant-based sources! My anaemia went away when I went vegan, but I also made other lifestyle changes that probably helped with that. Eat your high-iron foods with vitamin c veggies and fruits like tomatoes, and take care of yourself. Diet-based intervention also usually works better for anaemia than supplements - monitor your health, and you may find as you increase iron-rich foods like beans, you will need less supplemental iron.

I hope you stay healthy, and good luck!
