Im on sertraline and its literally doing nothing. All my mental health shit has got super bad and my doctor has prescribed me fluoxetine but my anorexia is screaming at me that it will make me gain weight as I've read online that it can. Just wondering what peoples experiencing with fluoxetine are and whether they gained from going on it. I currently eat 500-800 cals a day and I don't really want to decrease anymore to prevent the weight gain from the antidepressants. If anyone has any advice on how to prevent the weight gain please let me know!!

I need to do more research to see whether it just increases hunger or directly causes weight gain.

xx

It didn’t help with my depression at all when I was on it. It made me hungry and I gained weight. As soon as I got off of it, I lost all the weight.

I didn't gain weight. If anything I had less cravings and felt more energized. If you read the studies on antidepressants you'll find that fluoxetine shouldn't cause weight gain and it doesn't help weight gain recovery in anorexia nervosa (I wouldn't be taking it if I read otherwise).
However, you should talk about your concerns to your doctor.

Will I be missed because of who I am or because of how they see me?

I lost weight on it. It totally nuked my appetite. Also, its off-label use is for treating binge eating disorder!

I started it yesterday. I know they say it takes several weeks to start taking effect but I'm already experiencing noticeable differences, I'm a light-weight tho- everything hits me hard.

Less anxiety = less anxiety around eating. Unfortunate but I've been giving into cravings despite having decreased physical hunger sensations. Also noticing today an increased drive to eat despite not feeling any sort of physical hunger.

Also a bunch of energy and hard to sleep.

I gained weight for two months and am now healthier physically, but I am so mentally unstable. I feel depressed without restriction- an underlying purpose and motivation to get up and live my life. I don't want my health to deteriorate again- but I feel hopeless and I feel like I need it to get back on track and have meaning, confidence, and hope.

Please pray for me I don't want it to completely take over my mind.

Long term use is linked to weight gain more than short term use. Prolonged use affects the hypothalamus, which controls hunger and fullness cues.

I tried it and was so ravenous all day long! I had to stop within a few weeks because it was so bad. But then again every responds to medications differently. It's all how your body responds

I've been on fluoxetine before but never took it consistently enough for it to get a chance to work. Commenting because I am on sertraline now and this topic just reminded me to take my meds tonight! So thank you, I swear I can never remember to take them for the life of me

Can someone kindly inform me how to upload a gif on here please? ---edit, this in in progress thank you.

I’m currently on Zoloft. I’ve previously been on lexapro and trazodone. All of them warn weight gain as a side effect but I’ve lost weight since being on them. They effect everyone differently so it will be hard to find something that works for you in the aspect of weight.

I'm currently on Zoloft for anxiety and depression related to anxiety. I've only been on it for about 9 days and you're supposed to wait 2 weeks to see the results but I've already seen a bit of improvement with the severity of my panic attacks. Although, it makes me really nauseous and I've lost 6lbs so far.

The best thing to do is be honest with your doctor and really listen to what they tell you, the truth is that they deal with this stuff everyday and have seen the worst and best possible situations. I hope this helps!
