Hey! Not sure if there's any similar thread that exists already, but here's a new one!

One thing that has helped me in gaining a little more confidence in my body is knowing that I'm not really alone. While no one in my personal life that I know of has pica/dermatillomania, I've met quite a few people online that do! Makes this feel less like a disgusting secret I have to keep to myself, and gives me a chance to vent without feeling judged.

So let me know if ur out there! Drop some tips for how to stop picking, vent, do whatever!

My vent is just the frustration I get when someone says "just stop". Like, thanks genius!! It feels like picking is engrained in my brain as my first reaction to stress, hunger, or boredom.

isn't it? I've had dermatillomania for a while, just i think out of the human grooming instinct, but then one day I read someone talk about eating scabs, and I was like huh.

Kinda wish I'd never read it now lol, it's almost an addiction

i've been really struggling with this. i suffer from extensive skin picking as a compulsion with my OCD, but with that comes eating dead scabs i pick from it. so glad i'm not alone; no one really seems to talk about this purely because it is seen as so disgusting :s

True! Even when I found dermatillomania forums I felt a little left out b/c I didn't feel comfortable mentioning that sometimes I like to have a little skin snack...

Sending u good vibes <3

Eating skin is my biggest problem. I literally peel the skin off the bottom of my foot to eat it. I also use a nail clipper to clip the skin around my nails to eat it, all day, every day. I can't go anywhere without my "tools".

Wait.... I'm not alone with this? I mean I'm happy to know that, not happy that you have to go through the same thing. I've been doing this for years, it always starts from my super dry heels.

I also eat scabs which makes me feel disgusting but I just continue. I have pretty severe dermatillomania and I sometimes end up with a hole in my skin because of the picking.

I don't have this condition, but my sister does and gets shamed for it a lot. She picks the skin around her nails a lot to the point of bleeding

I never realised I had some sort of pica disorder, but apparently I do?! I bite and eat my nails, skin and scabs. Didn't really know it was a thing until now, too!

m not sure if this can help a lot, this is just my experience.
I pick the skin near my nails, sometimes I eat it
So, I noticed that when I got my nails done, I was very sorry to spoil the look. After all, I have other places for picking, and I don't lose anything

Yes and done it most my life one way or another

Anyone get the night terrors where they can't get to sleep, and end up ripping hairs, skin bumps etc?  I swear I'm gonna send myself mad one of these nights, I've even got out of bed in frustration at 3am in the winter to find tweezers to finish the job!

HWA I shouldn’t be this excited but I had no idea there would be other ppl with this on here too! it really does make sense tho, I have a feeling it’s more common than we may expect because,,, at least for me (because of course ed doesn’t necessarily mean restriction) its
ed=hungry=anxious=skin picking as a nervous habit then loops back around mixing with hunger and voila, next thing ya know you’re eating yourself.

here yall have some bandaids mwah

I pick/chew the dry skin bordering my fingernails. Not the cuticle, but other surrounding skin. I've never told anyone as I am an adult and it is a 'kiddy thing' to do and brings a lot of embarassment.

I consider myself mostly recovered from pica but I still really struggle with eating my dead skin. It doesn't help that I have eczema so I have a lot of dry skin to puck at or just eat the flakes that fall off. :(
My boyfriend's really understanding about my anorexia and supportive but he doesn't understand pica and he thinks it's really gross when I eat my skinband he always tells me off for it if he catches me doing it :(
Glad to know I'm not alone in this!

ok wait i do this and im so embarassed of it. im constantly picking at my face, nails. and scalp. i dont pull my hair anymore but i run my hands over my scalp over and over and then i get little scabs or flakes etc and i eat them. or small scabs off my face from constantly picking acne. and with my nails, for some reason i dig out the hangnails with tweezers until a whole side of my cuticle is gone. if i have ingrown nails i will rip them out at home myself, it is sopainful but i cant stop till its out of me. i used to pick my upper arms daily and scratch any bumps or texture, but thankfully have stopped since ive been working more and havig my arms covered constantly when im home. when i pulled my hair, i would eat my hair follicles, and ball my hair up and rub it, like a sensory thing. i dont know why. i want to stop. ive done it since i was like 9 y/o i just cant stop for some reason :(
