how did the process of getting diagnosed go? did your gp get concerned about your weight and recommend you to a psychiatrist or something? are gps allowed to diagnose, too? were you underweight st the time of your diagnosis? did you have to talk about your food habits or did you not have to say anything at all? i have so many questions

mine is probably not the norm but this is how it went for me. i got diagnosed when i was in high school because my parents were worried and they saw me pass out, so they took me to the doctor. i’d lost 25-30 pounds since the last time i had been to the doctor and i was pretty underweight. my heart rate was super low so they did labs and an ekg and my doctor was pretty much like ‘you have an eating disorder and you have to go to the hospital right now’. my gp did ask me a lot about my eating habits, and i denied any ed stuff but had to go to the hospital anyways because of my heart rate. they tried to get me to eat there and when i refused they called for a psych evaluation and pretty much directly after that they diagnosed me and scheduled my intake for ed inpatient. i think a gp can refer you to a psychiatrist for a diagnosis, but the psychiatrist has to be the one to diagnose it.

If I can recall correctly, when I was diagnosed with anorexia at age 12, my parents took me in for a consult at an eating disorder clinic & they asked me a couple of questions and weighed me (I was 90 pounds at the time) and then they were immediately like “she needs to be admitted” and so my parents agreed, and I was livid, lol.

Are you asking because you want to get diagnosed?

I think the answer will depend on where you're located and how you go about it

I was like 15 or 16 the first time so I dont remember but the second time I was 27 almost 28 and I had to go to the er from passing put (hadnt been to any medical pro for more than a year before this) and found out my kidneys were in failure and got weighed and haf bmi 17ish got blood draws and all that and it was pretty clear. I had also managed to fully stop purging in the months before so they switched my dx from bulimia to anorexia

My mom forced me into therapy after watching me struggle for years, there the psychiatrist diagnosed me. It has changed over the years by different psychiatrists and me at different weights but always either AN or EDNOS

My therapist sent me to the dr to get diagnosed, I was seeing her just on a standard mental health plan - doctor already knew about eating disorder as I had told her way before when I had estrogen issues, but no actual diagnosis at the time. She basically just ran down a checklist and calculated a score and ticked the anorexia box on the eating disorder mental health plan and sent the new referral to my psych. I was BMI 20 at the time of diagnosis but my dr had previously seen me at probably 18 before I gained a little

PS. If you want, I can send you the plan via msg, I have a photo copy of it and that’s what she used to come up with my diagnosis so might give an idea? I’m in Australia so will probably be different where you are but surely not too different

I attempted suicide and because my BMI was so low, they didn’t bother asking me if I was depressed and was just referred straight to ED services (thanks CAMHS). The day I got my diagnosis I ended up in hospital.

I was 16 years old and my parents were worried about my eating habits. They made me go to several doctors - nothing was wrong with me physically, blood tests were all right except for high levels of cholesterol. Then they sent me to a psychologist, after they talked to her about my eating habits and she diagnosed me.

it was about 6 months ago, relatively normal weight. the school called my parents with concerns about my eating obvs had to then see my GP who referred me to CAMHS they then referred me to the ED team (CEDS CYP) who then diagnosed me with bulimia, they changed it to atypical anorexia and im about to get rediagnosed with just AN. they just ask about eating habits and behaviours basically

It was first time I had access to any medical services, I was around 18, and wanted therapy. So I went, told them the issues straight up, and wa-la. 🤷

I decided to be honest with my new therapist since I'm tired of living like this (I kinda regret it sometimes tho), and she's been following up with this for our last couple sessions together and trying to get me to stop obsessively counting my calories and maybe up my intake from my usual 500cals, as well as not weight myself except when I have my appointments with her once a week.

It's definitely hard (specially rn cause I only just met her last month) but I try to be hopeful that I can stop using my ED as a coping mechanism for my depression and to "alleviate" my gender dysphoria.

My parents withdrew me from school without telling me when I was 13 and took me to an ED clinic. That’s how I got diagnosed. I thought everyone was crazy. 😂

I went to the doctor for stomach cramps and when they took my heart rate it was in the 30's, my heart rate + my weight that my doctor had been seeing go down (because my dad was getting sus of me and forcing me to go in  ) they came up with the anorexia diagnosis. I remember being transferred to a children's hospital and it was very late/dark and I remember being super tired but I stayed up to hear the nurse say the doctor would talk to us all more in the morning but that they were diagnosing me with anorexia, I got super scared because I had been "caught" but after that the doctors didn't do much besides yell at me for having an "addiction" and watch me eat.

Went to a therapist for depression symptoms and offhandedly mentioned that I'd been struggling with eating as well. And from that point on all questions she asked were geared towards an ed so
Got diagnosed with an that day and was like okay but what about the mental illness I'm trying to suppress by not eating??

I was diagnosed when my husband and I were going to marriage counseling and the therapist said “before we go any further we need to address the elephant in the room” and she proceeded to confront me about my weight...I was at about 80lbs or so.... and obvious health issues bc of it ( found out later my husband asked her to confront me). That led to my husband taking charge and giving me an ultimatum of getting help or being forcibly committed.

I was referred to an ED therapist and ED psychiatrist and was pretty much immediately diagnosed and sent to the hospital and the rest is history.

Oh, and I’m no longer married to the asshole control freak that compounded my stress and anxiety that ultimately led to my ED. :)
