Recently been noticing a trend on tiktok of people saying in order to recover from an eating disorder you need to admit you're fat phobic. To me that's probably the dumbest shit I've heard but what are your guy's thoughts?

Hmmm, idk but I think there might have been people who had EDs who recovered before 2019 who did just fine not "admiting they're fat-phobic".

EDs are not typically rooted in fat-phobia, but a whole bunch of other extremely complex things. It's never usually just one thing, either. The root causes of EDs are notoriously difficult to unpack, pick apart and come to terms with. Trauma, family dysfunction, abuse, control issues, perfectionism, sensory issues, even just the way your mind works all play part in the development of EDs.

You cannot boil it down to "I'm fatphobic " lol.

I think anyone who say this has completely dishonest intentions really.

It just comes across as "I want you to hear you say that you're not nice about fat people", but masquerading it like they give fucks about people with EDs they just don't.

That's just HAES/FL/FA/BOPO trying to convince you and the rest of the world that the only source of your ED is being fatphobic.

It's bullshit. Being fat can have serious health consequences. So if not wanting to deal with those health consequences makes me fatphobic, then by all means, I am fatphobic.

Omg, you know what?

I don't even know if I'd be that surprised if that actually happened.

Just replace "fear of gaining weight" with "fat-phobia" I guess.

THIS! I had no idea how to word my thoughts out other then "that's dumb". But yeah, I completely agree. A lot of my own deep routed issues and struggles stem from trauma more or less. It felt like such a huge spit in the fucking face to see it and how many people were in the comments, agreeing! It was just a what in the absolute fuck.

luckily most medical professionals don't subscribe to that tess holliday school of thought

of course i'm fucking "fatphobic" when it comes to myself. it's literally part of the diagnostic criteria for this hell.

Fatphobia just means fear of fat/getting fat, which is pretty accurate for a lot of people with an eating disorder.

If depends if you are using the term phobia to mean fear or how it is now often used to mean hatred. I mean I guess I am 'fatphobic' in terms of I am afraid of gaining weight and having more fat on my body. But I am not in the way that they mean it - I don't have anything against fat people whatsoever, I literally don't give a toss about anyone else's body. To me fat is totally normal to have and looks fine on everybody but me. The only person I hate is myself, no one else.

idk the exact definition, but according to this one--"irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against, obesity or people with obesity"--a lot of people with ed's fall outside of having fatphobia (assuming that you'd have to demonstrate every behavior).

lmao and when did normies decide that all people with ed's hate fat people?

see it all depends what people mean by 'fatphobic'. anorexia is literally a fear of fat and gaining weight, so yeah i guess literally we are phobic of fat. but hating fat people isnt a trait of eds, these girls were just fatphobic before and trying to make up for it by claiming it was their ed's fault, when it isnt

That is dumb. Anorexia is about control.

I would rather make an impact on people's hearts than on their eyes.

Wow. The cows behind HAES have reached a new low- using someone else’s ED to play like they’re a victim.

Tiktoks are just stupid in general. There are tiktoks glamorizing ED's and then there are tiktoks villianizing those with ED's. Everyone just wants to make everyone look bad, I avoid social media as much as possible for that reason.

Its honestly pathetic, you can tell they actually dont like thier bodies. Why else would people feel the need to yell at mentally ill people and demand validation?

Fat Liberation, Fat Acceptance, Body Positive -- these ideals are sneaking into recovery literature and stating that all Ed's are directly rooted in fatphobia...so you have to admit you are fatphobic to truly "heal"
