I think maybe with the teenage body changing and a lack of other control in your life eating disorders may be slightly more common in teens but it’s a lie that that encompasses everyone. Plus not everyone makes it from eating disorders and brain illness so a percentage die younger. Never feel alone as an adult with an eating disorder there are loads of us out there even if the media doesn’t report on it so much.

I'm the oldest on this thread so far at 52 in July. My relapses happened after pregnancy and then after I left my son's (now 17) abusive violent ex ten years ago. It's come and gone with various degrees of underweight but the latest relapse was last March during UK lockdown.

I had IP treatment about 2yrs ago and first got diagnosed then. Idt it matters what age you are, though I hide it - I want to stay relevant with the younger members, not quite an old fart yet lol.

And not that it matters but I don't look or act my age.

22 here, I absolutely hate the stigma that surrounds this disorder as well.

It is not true. I am older, no longer a teen, and still have it. Even children younger than teenagers can get it. There's no specific age for it, just as there is no specific age for any other physical illness. You can even get chicken pox as an adult, it's not just a childhood illness. Same with anorexia.

eating disorders don't have an age range. I'm older. I've had disordered eating habits since I was a kid and I'm still having the same issues now

I'm 23 now but I've always thought thus stereotype was ridiculous even as a teen.
Kind of feels invalidating no matter your age because even IF you fall into the 'target' category it just feels like people are making it out to be a silly, irrational teenie thing instead of a mental illness that can befall ANYONE like literally every other MI out there

I didn't become full blown anorexic until I left for college for the simple reason that if I allowed it to take over in highschool I would get my ass thrown into treatment.

I'm 27 now and developed it somewhere around my 25th birthday. Plus, I'm FTM which sometimes makes me feel like people won't accept my identity if they learn that I have anorexia, because they think of it as a girl's disease and I'm born female. Anyway, you are never too old to have an ED. Mental illnesses don't discriminate.

I'm 26 now, I've had disorder eating since childhood (ARFID) thanks ASD! :/
But I didn't have a full blown eating disorder (AN B/P) until 23 so that's some bullshit. Don't believe the lies coming out of their mouths. Mental health being crappy doesn't have a time limit. Never has and never will.

33 here.  I struggled with eating issues for years but only developed full blown anorexia at around 19.  15 years later, here I am, so please rest assured this illness does not just affect teenagers!

Edit: I would add that when I was in IP, there were at least 3 women over the age of 40, one of whom was in her 60s.  It really can affect everyone.

I'm soon 23 but I've always felt I'm stuck with the highschool mindset/mentality in many things. I don't suggest it's relevant, but it makes me think like yourself.

38 and male, so a double whammy.

Always fun to read about how "these young girls need our help!". It seems to be getting better, though.
