Maybe teenage girls have a higher rate of getting diagnosed because adults usually can hide it better while teenagers who still live with their parents will get cought at some point and sent into threatment. Minors cant realy refuse to get inpatient while adults cant be forced that easily

i’m 21 & always feel invalid, esp bc my partner developed anorexia as a teen & constantly talks about their time in treatment & allll the different places they went to. they’re 22 & in recovery. meanwhile, i’ve struggled with disordered eating since i was 14 but didn’t develop a full blown eating disorder until i was almost 20. i’ve never been ip/residential. it makes me feel so fake & not sick enough.
long story short, you are not alone!! you are sick enough & this is not just a juvenile illness, it can affect literally anyone

I think I had some sort of emotional eating issues when younger, but didn't restrict / purge / be constantly checking my weight until I was 17 (but soon to turn 18). Now I'm 24 and I'm so confused bc I feel like I'm acting like a teen for doing so, yet sometimes I see friends acting reckless by consuming loads of alcoholic drinks and then I'm like "welp, perhaps we all develop bad habits as we grow up and instead of drinks / tobacco, I chose AN-r and weed lol".

24 - have been in and out of hospitals since 15-16 up until 21-22 related to ED and alcoholism. Honestly wouldn't have been able to get some clarity to any diagnosis otherwise (would never self diagnose) so that was nice in some regard to have an understanding; atypical an; both an and Bul tendencies/depression/social anxiety disorder (which only funny to me bc the acronym is S.A.D. go figure)/PTSD

although i'm at a higher weight after pregnancy it still feels relevant although sometimes it feels like the ED part isn't *visible* bc i'm not smaller rn but then again even when i was it was always seen as "wow your so naturally tiny" but in a ~healthy~ way bc of being short

there's no winning in this

I'm 43. I struggled with disordered eating and thinking for all my life, but it didn't get really, really bad (diagnosed) until a few years back.
Age doesn't matter, mental disorderes doesn't discriminate.

god bless this thread, I've never felt more validated in my life. I felt so weird coming back onto this site out of my teens and it's refreshing to see so many familiar faces and adults on here

I'm under 21, but I'm a 20 year old, and I'm a guy. so yeah, I fucking hate the stereotype that it's for tween girls. Chronic eating disorders half the time start before youre a teen and last long after

Ditto.

Plus I feel for you because I have a idea what it's like for males with an Ed as my brother was Anorexic.

High restricting is the way for me because slow and steady wins the race. As far as I'm concerned, as long as you end the day on a calorie deficit, you have won.

I'm 30 and hear this constantly.. I wasn't even a teenager when I first became anorexic I was only 7! its so frustrating when people say this! its a disease and does not discriminate - anyone can get an ED.

Exactly!

Mine developed when I was 6 (I'm now 36) and I've been told that kids this young don't get eating disorders. Obviously complete BS.

38 and male, so a double whammy.

Always fun to read about how "these young girls need our help!". It seems to be getting better, though.

Ever since I found out my brother was Anorexic (this was like 12 yrs ago) I get extra pissy when people still say that 'boys don't get anorexia' ummm yeah they do!
