Do you know what type of collagen to get? Has it worked for you personally?

Do you know what type of collagen to get? Has it worked for you personally?

I'm not sure what my body would have looked like with collagen supplements during my first period of significant weight loss but I have been taking it for about 5 months now and my wounds close faster and exhibit significantly less scarring. The elasticity from a strong extracellular matrix is the reason behind the effectiveness of collagen supplementation during weight fluctuation. My stretchmarks are less intrusive as well

tldr; I have taken it, not during significant weight loss. But because of my knowledge on the nature of metabolic chemistry and how it impacts your bodies responses to physical changes I know that it would be useful and beneficial to your body and your goals of maintaining skin firmness and elasticity.

Recommendation:: A collagen supplement that has a diverse amount of collagen peptides (Something like this supplement with Type 1 at minimum)

*`*`*Here's a bit of what I learned

Your body makes procollagen by combining two amino acids — glycine and proline. This process uses vitamin C.

You may be able to help your body produce this important protein by making sure you get plenty of the following nutrients:

  • Vitamin C. Large amounts are found in citrus fruits, bell peppers, and strawberries (2).
  • Proline. Large amounts are found in egg whites, wheat germ, dairy products, cabbage, asparagus, and mushrooms (3).
  • Glycine. Large amounts are found in pork skin, chicken skin, and gelatin, but glycine is also found in various protein-containing foods (4).
  • Copper. Large amounts are found in organ meats, sesame seeds, cocoa powder, cashews, and lentils (56Trusted Source).

In addition, your body needs high quality protein that contains the amino acids needed to make new proteins. Meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, legumes, and tofu

2; [Source:: https://www.ncbi.nlm...les/PMC6835901/] I got interested because I am a biology undergraduate and studying nutrition has been a personal interest of mine.

The physiology of collagen and skin repair and maintenance

Collagen, the most abundant component of the extracellular matrix, is the decisive protein that determines skin physiology, by maintaining the skin structure and enabling its numerous functions to take place [4,5,6]. The extracellular matrix retains water and supports a smooth, firm, and strong skin. The structure of collagen is reminiscent of a rope. Three chains wind around each other forming a collagen triple helix. These building blocks combine to form collagen fibrils of enormous strength and tensile force [4,5,6].

Studies have shown that age-dependent reduction in collagen synthesis can be reversed by oral administration of specific bioactive collagen peptides [4,7,8,9,10,11]. These oligopeptides are obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis of natural collagen. After ingestion, they are further metabolized to bioactive di- and tri-peptides in the gastrointestinal tract, which are then released into the blood stream and accumulated in the skin to form the collagen biomatrix [4,7,9]. Typical collagen hydrolysates are composed of peptides of different lengths and, depending on the collagen source, are characterized by a special amino acid composition.
