I don't really know if this counts as pica, but I used to eat salt a lot when I was younger. Not just a little, but literally handfuls of it. It was constant. I was getting enough sodium in my diet as it was, and I had no deficiencies. It just kind of happened. I ate it mostly for the texture.
Now I mostly just chew ice a lot, which is a pretty bad habit (especially considering it is painful because of my sensitive teeth.)
So is this normal? Is there some physiological reason behind it? Or does it actually count as pica?

A naturopath/natural medicine practitioner might think it was an adrenal issue.

I eat a lot of salt, but because I have physiological issues... Go see your physician to rule out any physical problems.

I am not saying this in a judgmental way but that sounds so nasty to me. I know if I cook something that is a bit too salty my niece and nephews wont eat it. Maybe you do have an adrenal electrolyte imbalance of some sort. I do know two people in my family would eat butter by the stick as children... also really grosses me out.

what do you mean by "younger"?

I actually did this A LOT as a little child! I used to eat tons of salt while playing games with my toys: I remember this teddy bear having a "secret poket"  in the back where I would hide the salt shaker after stealig it from the kitchen. My parent knew but didn't actually make a big deal about, I guess reasonably enough since it all lasted about maybe six months when I was 4 or 5 then for some reason just stopped and I never really thought much of it ever after.

I used to do that as a kid, too! I remember sneaking into the kitchen when I was like 5 or 6, and I'd sprinkle loads of salt from the salt shaker into my hand (multiple times) and lick it off. I still am mental for salt as an adult. Although, I no longer lick it off my hand, lol.

I already posted on this topic, Barb from my own personal experience, I don't have pica, but I crave salt at certain times, like when I'm stressed out (probably adrenals) I'll crave salt and actually lick my finger dip it in some Himalayan pink salt and eat it, and I do the same thing post workout.

Some people eat or drink salt prior to getting out of bed in the morning, and helps to regulate blood pressure, if you tend to run on the low side.

Personally, I noticed that when I eat salt, I tend to have less severe fluctuations with blood pressure when changing positions, so I don't get that everything goes black for a second when I stand up feeling as often.

You're only meant to eat a teaspoon a day - you're putting yourself at risk of high blood pressure and all sorts of problems :/ http://www.nutrition...minerals/sodium

Shouldn't there be also recommendation based on weight, muscle mass and training one has in a day? These are all factors, no? If you sweat you lose fluids, you need more salt, more food and more water, then someone, who does not exercise. 2 g salt per day would leave me more fatigued and I would probably have longer recovery time, muscles would be sore, well, more then the usual.

A tsp of salt is 2.3g SODIUM, it's 6g SALT. Salt is sodium x 2.5. And a tbsp is way more than a tsp - you don't need to overcompensate that much!
